Most business owners treat networking like a numbers game: More events, more intros, more Zooms… more everything.

But here’s the truth no one tells you:

If you’re not in the right rooms, all that networking becomes a colossal waste of time.

Yes, I said it. And I say it with love—because I’ve lived it.

Let’s talk about what really makes networking work.

1. First Impressions Matter… and Chaotic Outreach Isn’t a Strategy

We’ve all received those cold outreach messages that feel like a business-card stampede racing toward the nearest cliff. They have no warmth. No curiosity. No value. It’s just chaos.

Networking begins the moment someone meets you—and when your energy is frantic or transactional, people feel it instantly. They may not know exactly why, but they pull back.

Because connection can’t grow in chaos.

It grows in presence, intention, and genuine interest in other human beings.

2. People Feel the Difference When You Show Up With Worthy Intent

Some time ago, I attended a local Chamber event where the director pulled me aside afterward and said, “Everyone in this room needs to meet you.”

Why? Because people feel the difference when you consistently give, connect, and support—without agenda.

This is the essence of relational sales. It’s the opposite of pitch-fest networking, which I loathe and abominate (yes, I said abominate—it’s that bad).

Good networking isn’t about who you can sell to today. It’s about who you can build a relationship with. It’s about who you can serve.

Good networking isn’t about who you can sell to today. It’s about who you can build a relationship with.

That’s when you become memorable. That’s when trust forms. And that’s when referrals start flowing in ways you never expected.

3. You Need the Right Rooms—Not Just More Rooms

You can network all day long… but if no one in the room is aligned with your ideal clients or connected to them, you’re just spinning your wheels.

So, let’s get strategic. Before saying yes to any networking event, ask yourself:

  • Is this room connected to my ideal clients?

Often, networking isn’t about the person you meet… it’s about their network. Proximity matters.

  • Are the people here invested?

When no one pays to participate, you get more tire-kickers and fewer serious business owners. Investment creates intention. Intention creates presence. Presence creates opportunity.

  • Does this community foster real connection?

Or is it a pitch parade where everyone talks at each other? If the event isn’t structured for genuine conversation and relationship-building, you won’t get traction.

I don’t know about you, but I have zero time for pitch fests. My business—and yours—is built on relationships. Connection. Curiosity. Collaboration.

4. How to Show Up Strategically in the Rooms That Matter

Being in the right room isn’t enough. You need to be present—and intentional—once you’re there. Here’s how I network with purpose:

Set a two-person goal.

I aim to walk away with two people I genuinely want to learn more about.

Just two.

Not twenty. Not “everyone in the room.”

Quality over quantity always wins.

Block time for follow-up.

I always reserve two hours in my calendar within 48 hours after the event. Why? Because the meeting is still fresh in everyone’s mind… and follow-up is where the real relationship begins.

My follow-up formula is simple:

  •    Remind them where we met

  •    Mention something they said that stood out

  •    Offer something of value

  •    Extend a gentle invitation to continue the conversation

Then I connect on LinkedIn with a short note.

Show up with gratitude and curiosity.

Your mindset changes everything. When you arrive open, present, grateful, and genuinely interested in others… that’s when meaningful connections happen.

The Bottom Line:

Networking Isn’t a Marathon—It’s a Matchmaking Event

It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing what’s aligned.

Choose rooms that uplift you. Choose conversations that energize you. Choose communities that help you grow—not just keep you busy.

Choose communities that help you grow—not just keep you busy.

Because when you’re in the right room, surrounded by the right people, with the right mindset… everything shifts.
