Nobody is shielded. Not the good ones, not the hardest working ones.

I sat in my car in a grocery store parking lot, covered in bird shit, sobbing.

Not because I was in a convertible with the top down.

I was sitting in my 2015 Honda Pilot. Windows up. Doors closed.

The Universe officially hated me.

This was the proof....

I was still living inside an abusive relationship. I was so close to saving fifty thousand dollars in a secret bank account. I was finally feeling free, powerful.

It was a beautiful day in South Florida. Low humidity, good hair day, the kind of day you really enjoy when living down here.

I pulled into a grocery store parking lot and saw a family sitting on the curb. Husband, wife, two kids, a sign asking for work.

What a beautiful family.

I’m buying them dinner.

This was a moment for me. I had sat for years in money lack. I had never been able to give.

But today was different. I was finally feeling so good about my financial situation. This family seemed perfect to help.

I thought about calling my mom afterward, telling her what a kind loving daughter she had raised. A way to brag and give myself a small ego boost.

I walked in with a smile. Intention. A little skip in my step.

I went in, grabbed my things, then hit the deli. I picked out the most perfect rotisserie chicken, a container of potato salad, biscuits, waters, plates, spoons, napkins.

As I walked to my car, I set my items inside.

Then took the two extra bags up the parking lot… my heart was beating with anticipation. Did they know I had bought them something? Could they tell I was walking toward them? I was giddy with excitement. I had never done anything like this before.

They were kind. Broken English, warm eyes, clearly exhausted. The wife opened the chicken immediately and started making plates for the children.

You could see it, the heat and hunger.

The husband thanked me ten times before telling me he wasn't looking for a handout. He'd just gotten laid off from a painting job, needed work, needed rent money, needed a way through.

I pulled out my phone to take his number, thinking of a few friends who might need a hand.

And that's when a bird shit on my tits.

Not a small amount.

And not just my tits. My face, glasses, chest... shirt. It took a full five seconds to understand what had just happened.

The husbands eyes widened.

bird flying

I stood there. Mortified.

I could feel it dripping down my face… down the cleavage of my breasts.

The husband started speaking fast Spanish to his wife. She looked up, then back down.

Dug into her diaper bag, pulled out baby wipes, stood up, and started wiping my chest.

I look down and all I see is green and grey bird shit being smeared across my skin.

She hands me a handful of wipes and I take off my glasses, that are covered and start to clean them… but it only made things worst. Just smears of grossness.

Is that a word?

I was disgusted past the point of words. I said something, grabbed what wipes I could, and ran away.

Just. Ran. Away.

I sat in my car. Crying. Victim.

The Universe so clearly hates me.

Like no matter what I did, no matter how far I climbed, no matter how kind I tried to be, something was always waiting to shit on me.

And. Now the Universes quite literally took a shit ON me.

I started to drive home.

Something shifted.

I can't say exactly how long, but at this time in my life I was already doing the work, reading the books, doing the reflection, working to become someone new even while I was still stumbling through the same old patterns.

That day, sitting at a red light with dried bird shit crusted on my glasses, a different thought showed up next to the victim one.

Quieter, but it stayed. What if this isn't the universe against me. What if this is just what life looks like? Hard. Sometimes shitty.

I wasn't a coach yet. I wasn't earning much money yet, wasn't any of the things I am now. I was a woman looking to leave an abusive relationship, saving money for the third time, exhausted in a way that didn't have a bottom.

We tell ourselves that being good should protect us. That if we're a good mother, if we work hard, if we don’t drink or do drugs, if we're kind to strangers in a parking lot, we've earned some kind of shield. Nothing bad is supposed to reach us anymore.

It isn't true. Nobody is shielded. Not the good ones, not the hardest working ones.

Sometimes you're coming up for air, and the next wave hits before you even get the breath in.

It's not about how many times you go under. It's about how many times you come back up. The most successful people you'll ever meet aren't the ones who avoided the waves. They're the ones who kept surfacing.

Life can feel like never-ending thrashing in shark infested, wave induced oceans.

And other times... it can feel like small things, landing at exactly the wrong moment.

Like a bird, shitting on your tits.

If you're in it right now, whatever it is. You are not alone. I'm right there with you.
