Women are known for being more emotionally attuned than men, which brings with it certain advantages. Here are three of them:
1. Often women have stronger emotional intelligence than men, which helps them to better understand and manage their emotions and empathize with others. As a result, women tend to build stronger relationships with clients, employees and partners and foster a more collaborative, supportive workplace than men do.
But any strength that’s taken too far, can turn into a weakness. And when our female CEO becomes too focused on the emotional comfort of others, her judgment will suffer and dilute her influence and effectiveness as a leader in the workplace,
2. Perfectionism and overwhelm are common factors for female leaders at work. Women are expected to take on a lot, both for themselves and others and are used to being evaluated by how much they are able to handle.
But when our heroine boss lady functions in a constant state of overdrive, she eventually becomes overwhelmed and exhausted. And when that happens, her fight or flight response is triggered which can cause her to lose sight of what matters most in situations. Because she is under a great deal of situational stress, her ability to see situations clearly and handle them is diluted.
3. A woman often prioritizes keeping others happy, by doing things (it helps) that help them to feel seen, safe and appreciated. But when the desire for a supportive work environment takes precedence over making the controversial but necessary choices for the good of the business, that priority becomes a liability and not a benefit.
Often a woman’s sense of self-worth in the workplace is based on how others react to her decisions. She wants to be seen as a supportive, responsive and caring boss who is generous with her employees.
But if her need for their approval supersedes sound decision-making, then she can become more easily manipulated by others and lose sight of important business goals.
These are just a few examples of how a woman’s strength when in balance, can result in amazing things. But when things become lopsided, the whole thing tips over and you lose sight of what really matters,
Has your sense of what’s the right thing to do, ever hijacked your common sense in business or personal situations? It can be hard to prevent the two from getting tangled up.
Sometimes what you need is an objective partner who can help you regain balance and keep you moving forward instead of being stuck.
